Henderson Defence Precinct site and boundary confirmed

Western Australia’s Henderson precinct moves into concept design as the preferred location for sustaining Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarines.

What happened

  • Planned facilities include out-of-water depot-level and contingency maintenance, a floating contingency dry dock, shipbuilding for larger vessels and a surface fleet sustainment yard.
  • Leidos Gibbs & Cox Australia has been selected for preliminary design of the floating dry dock.
  • With Osborne and HMAS Stirling, the sites are expected to support around 10,000 jobs over two decades.

Why it matters

A dedicated surface fleet sustainment yard means a long pipeline of maintenance periods, each with seawater, chilled water and fuel systems to return to service on time.
