Design lead appointed for submarine contingency dry dock

Leidos Gibbs & Cox Australia will lead preliminary design of a contingency dry dock for Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarines.

What happened

  • The dock will be built in Western Australia, linked to HMAS Stirling and the Henderson Defence Precinct.
  • It is needed from the early 2030s, ahead of depot-level submarine maintenance from the late 2030s.
  • The work is backed by an initial A$12 billion for the Henderson precinct.

Why it matters

New docks bring new shore services and new maintenance regimes. Systems that are commissioned clean and documented stay easier to sustain.
